Roy LaVerne McKaig, 88, of Paola, passed away on February 26, 2015 at North Point Nursing Home.

Roy was born on April 16, 1926 near Pressonville in Miami County to Clyde G. and Gertrude Christie McKaig. He attended school at Fayette, Missouri where his family had moved. When World War II started the family moved back to Paola and he enlisted in the Navy. He was stationed at Adak in the Aleutian Islands until receiving a medical discharge.

On June 6, 1948 he married Eleanor Good at the Louisburg Methodist Church. They shared almost 67 years together and had four children. In 1945 Roy and his dad opened Mac's Garage where he worked for 46 1/2 years before turning it over to his son, Dennis, who continues to operate the business. After retirement from the garage, Roy continued his passion for cars driving thousands of miles transferring automobiles for Olson Chevrolet and later for Lang Chevrolet.

Roy was proud of his years with the Paola Fire Department which he served on in the 1950's and 1960's. At the time, the department consisted of a fire chief and 12 volunteers who fought fires at the Citizen's State Bank, the lumberyard, and numerous smaller fires.
He was a member of the American Legion and VFW for over 50 years and served one year as the Commander of the VFW.

Roy was preceded in death by his parents Clyde and Gertrude, brother Dean, sister Bonnie, grandson Kevin Armstrong, and great granddaughter Lucy Armstrong. He is survived by his wife Eleanor; children Dennis McKaig (Alice), Paula Armstrong (Don) of Paola, Doug McKaig (Susan) of Parker, Colorado and Darrel McKaig (Laura) of Olathe; sister Edith Johnson of Montesano, Washington; six grandchildren Chad Armstrong (Julie) of Andover, KS, Kyle Armstrong (Erica) and Ian & Miles McKaig of Olathe, Heather McKaig (Holly) of Kansas City, and Sarah McKaig of Santa Monica, CA; and two great grandchildren Logan & Meghan Armstrong of Andover, KS.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Paola United Methodist Church or Grace Hospice.
