Doris Ann Asher, age 83, went home to be with the Lord on September 7, 2015. Ann was born to Dr. Russell and Lou Gene Wood on February 18, 1932 in Hamilton, Missouri. The Wood’s moved from Hamilton to Cameron, Missouri for Ann’s junior and senior years of high school. Ann spent her freshman year of college at William Jewell College in Liberty, Missouri. In August of 1951 Ann joined the Navy WAVES where she was a Chaplain’s assistant at the Bainbridge, Maryland Naval Training Center. After her service obligation Ann enrolled at the University of Kansas in 1953 where she met Allen Levi Asher on a blind date in the fall of 1953. Ann and Allen were married in Danforth Chapel on the KU campus June 6, 1954. Steve Allen was born on May 29, 1955 and upon graduating with a degree in Sociology in 1956, Ann and her family moved to Coffeyville, Kansas where Allen began his pharmacy career. Craig Eugene was born on November 9, 1957. The Asher’s moved to Paola, Kansas in 1958 after Allen accepted a job with Messer Drugs. Scott Wood was born on February 4, 1961 to complete the Asher family. Ann & Allen purchased the Nicholson Drug Store in late 1961 and moved to a new building in 1965 which was the beginning of Asher Pharmacy. Ann received her teaching certificate from Ottawa University and taught kindergarten and third grade during her children’s school years. Ann helped Allen in the drug store until they retired in 1994. Ann’s life was filled with civic activities including PEO, hospital auxiliary, church organizations, choir, and volunteer tutoring. Ann’s passions included music, sewing, crafts, camping, her family, and anything KU which was passed onto her children and grandchildren.

Ann was preceded in death by her husband, Allen Asher, her sister Linda Lou Hawk and her parents, Dr. Russell and Lou Gene Wood.

Ann is survived by son Steve Asher, wife Beth and children Justin and Brendan, son Craig Asher and children Dani and Nathan, son Scott Asher, wife Janice and children Adam and Emily.

She is also survived by her brother-in-law Jerry Hawk and children Russell, Mitchell and Michael, brother-in-law Kenneth Asher, wife Mary and children Chalen, Kenna, Danielle and Jerry, nephew Lee Uhlig, niece Jane Stotts and nephew Ted Uhlig.

On Friday, September 11, 2015 at 1:00, a visitation will be held at the Paola Methodist Church in Paola, Kansas with a funeral service at 2:00 pm. Burial will immediately follow the service at Paola Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Paola United Methodist Church or the Alzheimer's Association.
