Everett McBride, age 91, of Paola, passed away June 14, 2016 at Olathe Medical Center.

Everett was born August 20, 1924, in a small farming community outside of Ava, Missouri, to Edward and Dora Walker McBride. After a few years the family moved to Lockwood, Missouri, where he graduated from Lockwood High School in 1942. In high school he earned the name of Speedy while playing on the local high school football team.

World War II started and Everett and a buddy decided to enlist in the Navy before being drafted in the Army. His buddy was accepted but Everett wasn’t because he was colorblind. He was drafted into the Army in 1943 and served in the artillery participating in the European Theater, the Battle of the Bulge being discharged from service in March 1946. All of his adult life he was very proud of belonging to the 555th Battalion, Company D and attended many of their reunions.

While Everett was in service his family moved to Paola and he followed when he was discharged from service. He obtained work with Panhandle Eastern Pipeline in Paola as a helper and later advanced to a welder. Everett had a long career with Panhandle and enjoyed his retirement.

Everett met a Paola girl, Moriscene Spitzenberger, and married her September 5, 1947, in Ottawa, Kansas. Moriscene passed away June 21, 2010.

Everett was a life member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars and the American Legion with seventy years of continuous membership.

The last years Everett has been a resident at County Club Estates in Paola where he made many new friends and had an extended family.

Everett was preceded in death by his parents and two sisters, Faye Moenning and Martha Egidy. He is survived by his sister, Hazel McBride Mitchell and numerous nieces, great nieces, nephews and great nephews.

Memorial contributions may be made to Post 156 American Legion Riders.
