Phillip “Phil” D. Hruska, age 92, passed away January 10, 2017 at Comfort Care Homes in Ottawa, Kansas where he was a resident. Phil was born on August 4, 1924 in Morrisville, Missouri to Frank and Mary Nerud Hruska. They moved to Kansas and he attended and graduated from Paola High School in 1943. After graduating, he attended Kansas State University where he studied Mechanical Engineering. Phil enlisted in the United States Army Air Corp and served in Okinawa with the 34th Fighter Squadron in WWII. He received his honorable discharge in 1946.

Phil farmed in his early years and in 1961 he started a rock quarry business with his brother-in-law, C. B. White. In 1966, Phil, C. B. and Marcella White built the Paola Roller Rink which operated for 18 years before closing. Phil also had a trucking business up until his retirement. He was a member of the Holy Trinity Catholic Church and the Knights of Columbus in Paola.

He is preceded in death by his parents; brothers Paul, Frank, Hank and Steve; sisters Rose Mary Bulis, Angela Hruska (twin) and Marcella White.

Surviving are his nephews Frank (Donna) and Jerry White, John P. Gail and nieces Georgann Ostrander and Cathy Carter Medlin.
