Herbert Lee Fickel 89, native of Paola, Kansas, died on June 23, 2015 at Promise Skilled Nursing Facility in Overland Park, Kansas. Herb was born on May 5, 1926 in Paola, Kansas. He was the son of Floyd and Carrie Fickel. He enlisted into the United States Marine Corps on April 15, 1944. He went to the Pacific and fought in WWII on Iwo Jima with the 4th Marine Division. He was honorably discharged on June 15, 1946. One of his most memorable experiences was seeing the American Flag raised on Mt. Suribachi. Upon his return Herbert took a high school equivalency and graduated from Paola High School with the Class of 1945.

He was united in marriage to Terry Ann Waugh on December 15, 1946 at the First Presbyterian Church in Paola. They were married for 65 years. They made their home in Paola and became the parents of four sons. Herb co-owned Fickel’s Furniture on the square and worked as a salesman there for 46 years until he retired in January 1991.

Herb’s hobbies included golfing, gardening, volunteering, going to garage sales, driving around town and talking. He could never travel anywhere, where he didn’t know someone. Herb enjoyed traveling. He and Terry spent two winters in their fifth wheel at Rockport, Texas which is near Corpus Christie. He was a member of the Paola United Methodist Church. He is also a past president of the Lions Club.
