To the family: I played basketball with John, @ Park College for one school year.
He was a real hard nosed player; I was in retrospect an also-ran player.
Even though we were born in the same year, he seemed to me to be so much mature than I was.
I look at his picture as posted, and that large head and strong face are etched into and agree with my memory.
He surely must have been a rock steady, husband, father, and grandfather.

John and Nancy were our neighbors when we lived in Olathe Kansas. This was our first home as a married couple and we were so grateful and excited about starting our lives together. We met them while our homes were being built and instantly developed a friendship.
Nancy became like a second mother to me…always frank, honest, giving, loving and filled with wisdom and advice. John reminded me of my stepfather…a bit scary when you first met him, but a real teddy bear beneath the surface, very compassionate and so devoted to his family and to Nancy.
I’ll never forget the hours we spent in the garden and back yard digging and planting trees and flowers, and on their back patio sharing stories, cultures, food, debating politics and world events. This was a couple who lived by example and as a younger, recently married couple we could only hope our lives would be the same. They worked hard, were devoted parents and grandparents, loved God, were devoted Anglicans, and they loved each other. In a world filled with marriages that quickly end in divorce with the slightest conflict, this was a couple who rode the waves of life together in sickness and in health.
We moved to live in the Bahamas after my father died, but still tried to visit them whenever we came to Kansas City to visit Wayne’s family. We just found out yesterday about John’s passing when we received a returned Christmas card in the mail. They were such a stable part of our past that we instantly knew something was wrong. To our dismay, Wayne went online and found John’s obituary.
I cannot even begin to tell you how sad and grateful I am feeling at this moment. Sad because a great man has past and sad because I can only imagine what an empty space his passing has left in Nancy’s life. Grateful that for short time we got to know and love him. John’s footprints have left an imprint in our lives. We will never forget him.
Rest in peace, friend…
Love and Prayers to the family and to Nancy.

My lucky day was when John and Nancy moved in next door to me.No one could ask for better neighbors. They are the finest Christian people you could ever meet.We had some great visits and even Nancy's wonderful dinners. John and I would trade favors, like watering each others outdoor plants if one or the other was out of town. Now we have another angel in Heaven to look after us. May God bless the family. Joe McStay

Every thought of John brings a smile to my face, with the exception one. His passing brings tears to my eyes and a great deal of sadness fills my heart. At the age of 17, I went to work for John. Soon after, my parents transferred out of state and John took me under his wing. He taught me one valuable lesson after another about business, life and honor. He set high expectations of those who worked for him, he was tough but always fair. He gave others a chance to prove themselves and the tools and guidance they needed to do so. John's approval was deeply valued by all who worked for him.
Over the years, John transitioned from a boss to a father figure to one of my most honored, respected and trusted friends. I am very thankful he introduced me to his lovely wife, Nancy. He and Nancy went through many of life's trial and tribulations with me, both always ready to lend a helping hand or to offer sound advice whenever it was needed. I don't know where I would be today without both of them.
The love and dedication John and Nancy had for one another was truly amazing and a source of inspiration for myself and others. The bond they shared was so special and worthy of celebration. Another aspect of their relationship that was so heartwarming was the love they shared for their sons, daughter-in-laws and four beautiful grandchildren. I truly feel blessed that they allowed me to share in their lives over the past twenty seven years.
Nancy, I know that you have lost the love of your life and your very best friend. Though nothing will ever be able to fill the void left behind with John's passing, I hope that all of the wonderful memories will help comfort you during this difficult time.
I am so sorry I will not be able to attend the services on Thursday but I will be with you in spirit. My thoughts and prayers are with you and your family! Lindsey, Zachary and Mark send their condolences as well. They were all deeply saddened to hear the news.
With Love,
Christi

I'm so sorry to hear of your loss. I appreciate the kindness your whole family showed to me the summer I interned in KC, and how you took me in when I ended up homeless. My parents have kept me posted on news from your family, and perhaps vice versa as well. Hugs to all!
